Great price for residents of Japan. For most international buyers, it is the wrong console.
- The catch: The ¥55,000 Japanese-only edition works only with the console language set to Japanese and a PlayStation account set to the Japan region.
- Alternative: The standard PS5 Digital Edition (¥72,980 in Japan) does not carry these restrictions.
- Watch out: Disc games need a separately sold disc drive, and downloaded games must come from the Japanese PlayStation Store.
Japan's tax-free system changes on 1 November 2026
From 1 November 2026, visitors pay the full price including 10% consumption tax at the store. The tax is refunded after customs confirms at departure (airport or seaport) that the goods are leaving Japan, within 90 days of purchase. The minimum is ¥5,000 before tax per store. Refund methods and timing depend on the store, so ask at checkout and keep your receipts.
