International visitors should buy the multi-language model (¥69,980), not the cheaper Japan-only one.
- Japan-only model (¥59,980): Japanese system language only and designed for Japan-region Nintendo Accounts. Cheaper, but not built for overseas users.
- Multi-language model (¥69,980): Sold via My Nintendo Store. This is the version to choose if you will use it at home in English or another language.
- Watch out: Check the box label carefully in stores. The Japan-only version is clearly marked as 日本語・国内専用 (Japanese language / Japan only).
Japan's tax-free system changes on 1 November 2026
From 1 November 2026, visitors pay the full price including 10% consumption tax at the store. The tax is refunded after customs confirms at departure (airport or seaport) that the goods are leaving Japan, within 90 days of purchase. The minimum is ¥5,000 before tax per store. Refund methods and timing depend on the store, so ask at checkout and keep your receipts.
