Buy sealed products from official or reputable stores; buy singles from specialist card shops.
- Sealed packs and boxes: Pokémon Center stores and large retailers. New sets are often limited per person, and some are sold by lottery.
- Singles and older sets: Specialist card shops in Akihabara and Nakano Broadway, where prices and card condition are clearly listed.
- Watch out: Avoid boxes without intact shrink wrap from unknown sellers. Resealed and counterfeit products exist.
Japan's tax-free system changes on 1 November 2026
From 1 November 2026, visitors pay the full price including 10% consumption tax at the store. The tax is refunded after customs confirms at departure (airport or seaport) that the goods are leaving Japan, within 90 days of purchase. The minimum is ¥5,000 before tax per store. Refund methods and timing depend on the store, so ask at checkout and keep your receipts.
