For Japan-specific pairs, go to brand flagships; for wider choice, go to multi-brand sneaker shops.
- Japan-made and Japan-focused lines: Brand stores such as Onitsuka Tiger and ASICS carry ranges that can be hard to find abroad.
- Multi-brand choice: Sneaker chains and select shops in Harajuku and Shibuya carry the widest range.
- Watch out: Japanese sizes are in centimetres. Try pairs on in store, as sizing can differ from US/EU charts.
Japan's tax-free system changes on 1 November 2026
From 1 November 2026, visitors pay the full price including 10% consumption tax at the store. The tax is refunded after customs confirms at departure (airport or seaport) that the goods are leaving Japan, within 90 days of purchase. The minimum is ¥5,000 before tax per store. Refund methods and timing depend on the store, so ask at checkout and keep your receipts.
